A Neighborly Beginning
If you’ve found your way to Central MA Mahjong, welcome. I’m Erika, a Grafton neighbor, longtime lover of cozy historic spaces, and the founder of this little community that has quickly become one of my favorite parts of the week.
This blog will be a place where I share stories from our tables, reflections on learning and teaching, behind‑the‑scenes updates, and the heart behind this growing community.
Why I Started Central MA Mahjong
The short version is simple: I wanted to create a place where people in Central Massachusetts could gather, learn, laugh, and feel genuinely welcomed. But the longer version — the real one — is what matters.
I fell in love with Mahjong because it brings people together in a way that feels rare these days. It’s strategic but social, structured but creative, competitive but warm. And in a world where so much of our connection happens through screens, Mahjong invites us back to the table — literally.
When I looked around Central MA, I realized something was missing. Boston had a thriving Mahjong scene, but here in our towns — Grafton, Shrewsbury, Westborough, Northbridge, Sutton — there wasn’t a consistent, welcoming place for beginners or returning players to learn and play. So I decided to build one.
I wanted a space that felt neighborly and boutique, not corporate. A place where women could feel comfortable trying something new. A place where beginners weren’t rushed, where questions were encouraged, and where the joy of learning was just as important as the game itself.
And when the opportunity came to host sessions inside a historic building on South Street — pocket doors, fireplace, all the charm — it felt like the universe saying, “Go for it.”
What I Hope This Community Becomes
My hope is that Central MA Mahjong becomes more than a weekly session. I want it to be:
- A welcoming space for beginners
- A consistent weekly ritual people look forward to
- A local community that grows naturally, one table at a time
- A place to learn without pressure
- A boutique experience that feels personal and thoughtfully crafted
Most of all, I hope it becomes a place where you feel at home.
What’s Next
I’ll be using this blog to share:
- Session stories
- Beginner tips
- Updates from the studio
- Reflections on teaching and community
If you’re new here, I’d love to welcome you to a Wednesday session — whether you’re brand new, returning after years away, or simply Mahjong‑curious.
Here’s to the beginning of something special.
